Purposes

Royal Order of Santa Isabel is an honorific Dynastic Order, privative of the Portuguese Royal Household, with the nature of a private association of faithful of the Catholic Church and with the purpose of keeping alive the devotion to the Queen Santa Isabel. It is based in the Coimbra Diocese and its statutes have the canonical approval of the Bishop of Coimbra. The Spiritual Guidance of the Royal Order of Santa Isabel is provided by the Very Reverend Canon António Marim.

It is composed by Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Bragança, Grand Master of the Order, Dames Grand-Collar, Dames Commander, Dames of Honor and by Institutions of Honor and Devotion.

It is the Order’s duty to respond to the moral and material needs of its time, in particular the defense of the values of life, the person and the family, by supporting maternity, children at risk, the elderly and the administration of palliative care.

Emblem, Insignia and Costume

The Order invokes as its Patron Santa Isabel of Portugal and takes “PAUPERUM SOLATIO” as its emblem.

The Order’s insignia is an enamel and metal medal, oval in shape, edged with flowers with the royal crown on one of the tops. The medal has the image of Santa Isabel on the main face, depicting the miracle of the roses and the inscription PAUPERUM SOLATIO. On the back, the medal has the letters CJ in cipher and the date MDCCCL; on the wheel, in blue, the inscription REAL ORDEM DE SANTA ISABEL. The insignia may have a pink ribbon or band with a white stripe in the center.

The costume to be worn by the Grand Master of the Order and by the Ladies on solemn occasions consists of a skirt and black coat or dress, black mantilla, white gloves and black shoes. The insignia must be placed on the lapel, on the left side.
